Indian humanoid robotics have been advancing steadily in recent years. While India trails behind other countries in artificial intelligence and robotics, there is significant momentum with Indian startups and governments swiftly adopting new technologies. According to the IFR report, robot sales in India surged by 27%, reaching 2,627 units, almost matching Thailand's figures. Another survey ranks India third globally in robotic automation adoption. This article explores the top 10 Indian-made humanoid robots that are reshaping the field of robotics.


1. Manav

India's first 3D humanoid robot, Manav, was developed by the A-SET Training and Research Institute in Delhi, the national capital, by Diwakar Vaish. Weighing 2 kilograms and standing 2 feet tall, this robotic figure is primarily designed for research purposes. It integrates vision and sound processing capabilities, enabling it to walk, talk, and dance in response to human commands.

Manav is among the top 10 Indian-made humanoid robots, demonstrating its ability to play football, perform a headstand, and do push-ups. It operates on open-source code, designed to learn and mimic child-like behavior. Equipped with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, it features a rechargeable 3.7V lithium battery that provides up to one hour of runtime when fully charged.


2. RADA – Enhancing Airport Customer Service Through Robotics

RADA is a unique humanoid robot developed by Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. It is specifically designed to automate and elevate the customer experience prior to boarding aircraft. Deployed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3, RADA communicates essential information about Vistara's products and services through clear, automated messages.


3. AcYut: India's First Indigenous Robot

AcYut, India's pioneering indigenous robot, was developed by students from BITS-Pilani with significant government sponsorship. Representing a collaboration with Indian Classical Music (ICM) and BITSAA (BITS Alumni Association), AcYut has showcased India prominently on international platforms such as RoboCup and RoboGames. 

AcYut holds the distinction of being the sole Indian representative in the highly competitive RoboCup Humanoid Teen Size Soccer Leagues. In these leagues, robots autonomously compete in soccer matches, highlighting AcYut's technical prowess and its contribution to robotics on a global scale.

 

4. Robocop – India's First Police Robot

Developed by H-Bots Robotics, a cutting-edge startup specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning based in Hyderabad, Robocop marks India's pioneering step into police robotics. This humanoid robot is designed to support law enforcement and traffic management tasks.


Beyond life-size, Robocop is equipped with an array of sensors including ultrasonic, proximity, and temperature sensors. It is tailored to secure and monitor locations such as offices, shopping malls, airports, and public venues, ensuring enhanced security and safety measures.

 

5. INDRO – India's Tallest Autonomous Humanoid Robot

India celebrates its advancements in humanoid robotics with INDRO, scaling around two meters, an impressive creation by Santosh Vasudeo Hulawale. Developed using economical materials like aluminum, wood, cardboard, and plastics, INDRO stands as a testament to ingenuity. According to research, INDRO serves purposes ranging from entertainment and education to light household tasks.


This autonomous humanoid robot isn't just autonomous; it also operates under manual control when needed. With 31 motors, INDRO mimics human capabilities by grasping items and lifting objects weighing up to 2 kilograms with its hands.

 

6. Mitra – A Humanoid Robot for Human Interaction

Mitra stands as one of India's top 10 humanoid robots, developed by Invento Robotics based in Bangalore. This intelligent robot, standing five feet tall, is capable of interacting with humans. Mitra made its debut at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), where it was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ms. Ivanka Trump.


Crafted from fiberglass, Mitra is designed to welcome customers and provide contextual assistance through features such as autonomous navigation, face recognition, and speech recognition. It includes a touchscreen on its chest for situations where verbal communication is not suitable. With a single charge, Mitra can operate continuously for up to 8 hours. It is also proficient in understanding multiple languages.

Mitra currently engages customers at Canara Bank and PVR Cinemas in Bengaluru, conversing and greeting visitors in their premises.

 

7. KEMPA – Advancing Humanoid Technology in India

KEMPA stands out among India's top 10 humanoid robots, created by Bengaluru-based startup Sirena Technologies using advanced AI technology. This high-tech humanoid robot was entirely developed and built in Bengaluru.


KEMPA is designed to assist with flight and check-in information, as well as other flight-related queries. Although still undergoing refinement prior to its official launch, KEMPA can recommend local attractions and engage in conversations with passengers, enhancing their travel experience.

 

8. Vyommitra: ISRO's Humanoid Robot for Manned Space Missions

Vyommitra, developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), is a humanoid robot designed specifically for manned space missions. This advanced robot is equipped with sophisticated infrastructure and capabilities to assist astronauts during space missions.



9. Maitri: Revolutionizing Healthcare with Robotics

 Maitri, developed by Asimov Robotics headquartered in Kochi, is a humanoid robot designed specifically for healthcare applications. Equipped with tools tailored for hospitals and clinics, Maitri is pioneering advancements in healthcare delivery across India.



10. HDFC Bank's Robotic Assistant (IRA)

HDFC Bank introduced IRA 2.0, an advanced interactive robotic assistant designed to significantly enhance customer experiences at their branches. IRA engages with customers by answering banking queries, providing FAQs, and guiding them through the bank using voice navigation.


Developed in collaboration with Invento Makerspaces and Senseforth Technologies, IRA represents HDFC Bank's pioneering effort in deploying AI-powered customer service bots in the banking sector. This GPS-based indoor humanoid robot features a speech recognition module trained to understand customer queries. It navigates the branch using ultrasonic sensors and employs facial recognition technology to identify customers.
